Founded in 2010, the Spanish major has enrolled full-time undergraduate students since 2011 and graduate students since 2017. The first-level discipline for Spanish is Foreign Languages and Literature, which is a flagship discipline in Hunan Province. Currently, the program has nine full-time teachers (including one foreign teacher), four of whom hold doctoral degrees and two are master's advisors. In recent years, Spanish teachers have led one national-level project and multiple provincial- and ministerial-level projects, published many high-quality academic papers, and guided students to win dozens of awards in national and provincial-level competitions.

Practicing the educational philosophy of “character development, knowledge transmission, competence building, and intellectual inspiration,” the program is committed to cultivating professionals grounded in socialist core values. Graduates will possess strong Spanish language proficiency and relevant domain knowledge, and the ability to meet the demands of China's international exchange, economic development, cultural dissemination, education, and academic research. The program also aims to foster students’ awareness of self-directed learning, innovation, and critical thinking ability.

The program has signed agreements for “3+1” undergraduate training with prestigious Spanish universities, including the Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of Alcalá, University of Salamanca, and University of Santiago de Compostela. The proportion of students participating in international exchange programs over the years exceeds 47%. Over the years, the passing rate of EEE-4 and EEE-8 for students of Spanish major has consistently been significantly higher than the national average. Students have achieved outstanding results in various academic competitions at all levels, winning three awards in regional competitions and three awards in provincial-level competitions in the past two years. Among the 141 graduates from the last five years, 17 pursued further studies in China, 27 pursued further studies abroad, and 97 were employed. The rate of students pursuing advanced degrees exceeds 40%, and the employment rate has remained at 100% for several consecutive years.
