The objective of College English teaching is to develop students’ ability to use English effectively, enhance their intercultural communication awareness and competence, foster autonomous learning ability, and improve their overall cultural literacy. It aims to enable students to use English effectively in their studies, daily life, social interactions, and future careers, thereby meeting the needs of national, social, institutional, and personal development.

According to the Undergraduate Talent Training Program of Central South University, College English adopts a differentiated instruction approach based on the talent cultivation requirements of different schools and departments. Instruction is organized into three types of classes: regular, arts and sports, and international classes. The College English curriculum consists of compulsory courses at the foundational stage and a series of elective courses at the advanced stage.

Teaching is conducted under a three-by-three pedagogical model, which integrates three major teaching forms and three key teaching stages. The teaching forms include ubiquitous self-directed learning based on textbooks and online learning platforms, knowledge instruction delivered through MOOCs, micro-courses, and related formats, and small-group interactive sessions supported by multimedia classrooms. The teaching stages consist of pre-class self-study, in-class interactive communication, and post-class consolidation and enhancement.

The College English teaching environment is modern and well-equipped. The university has invested over 80 million RMB to build the Foreign Language Network Teaching Building, which houses nearly 10,000 square meters dedicated to College English teaching and experimental instruction. It includes 36 digital language laboratories with more than 1,400 seats and three self-access learning facilities with 400 seats, accommodating up to 1,800 students simultaneously for study or online English examinations. The school has also installed a satellite reception system, enabling students in all foreign language classrooms to watch international language programs. In addition, a campus-wide broadband network provides access across all campuses and student dormitories, creating a comprehensive, ubiquitous learning environment for College English.

IIn today’s globalized world, language serves not only as a tool for communication but also as a bridge for cultural transmission and exchange. The Center keeps close track of the latest trends in foreign language teaching both domestically and internationally, continuously updating educational concepts, optimizing teaching models, and strengthening course-based civic education. By balancing teaching and research, and prioritizing both teaching quality and talent development, the Center continually advances College English education. At the same time, it is committed to enhancing faculty professional competence and research capacity, fostering a dynamic and innovative teaching environment, and striving to cultivate high-quality, versatile graduates capable of meeting the demands of future society.
