1. Program Overview
Founded in 1972, the English major at CSU represents a National First-Class Undergraduate Program. It offers MA and PhD programs in the first-level discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature, and houses several premier research platforms, including the Hunan Translation Studies Base, the Hunan ASEAN Culture Research and Exchange Center, and the academic journal Foreign Language and Translation. Guided by the principle of “moral integrity and national service,” the program features multilingual training, an integrated undergraduate-to-graduate pathway (BA-MA-PhD), industry-academia collaboration, and international partnerships. Boasting distinguished faculty and extensive educational resources, the program offers an integrated curriculum, interdisciplinary platforms, and a collaborative education mechanism.
2. Educational Objectives
The program advances core socialist values, with moral education serving as the cornerstone of “New Liberal Arts” development. It cultivates versatile talents with outstanding professional competence, proficiency in multiple languages, and cross-disciplinary expertise; interdisciplinary talents with profound patriotic commitment and broad international vision; and visionary leaders with elite social awareness, well-rounded development, and the capacity to shoulder national rejuvenation. Graduates are expected to achieve:
l Value development: Cultivate firm ideals and convictions, uphold the leadership of the Communist Party of China, and practice core socialist values. Become confident ambassadors of Chinese culture, articulate communicators of China’s perspectives, innovators in Chinese intellectual traditions, and pioneers shaping China's future.
l Knowledge acquisition: Master English language and culture; understand fundamentals of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and information technology to form interdisciplinary knowledge structures; establish solid foundations and broad vision for academic research.
l Capacity building: Develop advanced multilingual proficiency, literary appreciation, and intercultural competence; cultivate strong autonomous learning, IT application, critical thinking, innovation, and practical abilities; demonstrate robust academic research capacity.
l Wisdom enlightenment: Nurture deep patriotic commitment and global perspective; strengthen confidence in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics; uphold loyalty to the CPC, dedication to the people, and strict self-discipline. Become foreign language talents capable of serving global governance, promoting mutual learning among civilizations, and sharing China's development stories with the world.
Graduates are well-prepared for careers in translation, teaching, research, and management across international organizations, global communication, international trade, and cultural exchange. With strong capacity for sustainable learning and continuous development, they will become a vital force in advancing national rejuvenation, facilitating cross-cultural dialogue, and building a shared future for humanity.
3. Graduation Requirements
Students must demonstrate sound political orientation and moral integrity. They shall acquire systematic knowledge of English language and literature with interdisciplinary expertise; develop logical reasoning, critical thinking, innovation, autonomous learning, and collaboration skills; and cultivate cross-cultural communication and research capabilities enhanced through digital literacy. Specific requirements include:
l Well-formed moral character: Demonstrate love for the country and people, support for the CPC, and sound worldviews, values, and outlooks on life. Maintain physical health and psychological well-being; actively engage with social development; participate in public welfare; fulfill civic duties; and serve as a bridge for cross-cultural communication with distinctive Chinese characteristics.
l Broad knowledge: Master foundational knowledge of English literature, linguistics, and translation; understand similarities and differences between English and Chinese. Acquire knowledge of English literary principles, literary history of major English-speaking countries, and major writers and their works. Grasp the history, politics, culture, and society of English-speaking countries and regions. Understand Chinese history, language, and culture, with solid proficiency in classical Chinese to tell China's stories effectively in English. Develop foundational knowledge of engineering, business, economics, and related disciplines.
l Diversified abilities: Demonstrate multilingual proficiency and IT application skills to analyze and solve complex problems in the field. Exhibit capacity for international engagement, cultural exchange, and mutual learning. Introduce advanced foreign cultures and disseminate outstanding Chinese culture through solid language skills and critical thinking, forming innovative judgments and putting them into practice.
l Comprehensive quality: Demonstrate proactive learning and adaptability to acquire new skills and knowledge. Apply innovative thinking to propose effective solutions; manage time efficiently; and develop strong cross-cultural competence and global competitiveness that evolve with the times.
4. Graduation and Degree Requirements
Students must meet the university's requirements in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education, complete all teaching components in the curriculum, and earn a minimum of 147.5 credits. Graduation is conditional upon passing the graduation thesis defense. Eligible students may be awarded a bachelor's degree in accordance with CSU’s degree regulations.
