1. Program Overview

Founded in 1983, the Japanese major at CSU was approved to offer master's degrees in Japanese Language and Literature in 2007. It is part of the first-level discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature, a key discipline in Hunan Province. Recognized as a Class A program in the Shanghai Ranking’s Best Chinese Universities Rankings for both 2021 and 2022, it is also a Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program. All faculty members have overseas educational backgrounds, with an exceptional student-to-faculty ratio of 6:1. Characterized by multilingual integration, an integrated undergraduate-to-graduate pathway (BA-MA-PhD), industry-academia-research collaboration, and international partnerships, over half of the students participate in exchange programs in Japan each year. With a postgraduate admission rate exceeding 40% and a consistent graduate employment rate of 100% for many years, alumni pursue careers in government agencies, renowned enterprises, and higher education institutions, or pursue advanced degrees at prestigious universities worldwide.

2. Educational Objectives

The program is committed to cultivating innovative foreign language talents with moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education grounded in proficiency in Japanese, Chinese, and English. Students develop humanistic qualities, an innovative and collaborative spirit, profound patriotic commitment, and a broad global perspective, preparing them to contribute to global governance, mutual understanding among civilizations, and the dissemination of Chinese culture. Graduates are expected to:

l Patriotic commitment and professional dedication: Graduates will possess strong patriotic sentiments, a heightened sense of social responsibility, and sound worldviews, values, and outlooks on life. They will be capable of preserving and disseminating excellent traditional Chinese culture, while assuming leadership roles in their respective fields.

l Solid knowledge and cultural literacy: Graduates will master Japanese, Chinese, and English, along with a well-structured understanding of the humanities, integrating Eastern and Western traditions. They will possess extensive cultural literacy, IT skills, and continuously enhance their capacity for innovative practice and scientific research.

l Broad vision and reflective innovation: Graduates will develop a broad international perspective, profound cross-cultural understanding, strong intercultural competence, and critical thinking and reflective innovation through keen observation and inquiry.

l Collaboration and sustainable development: Graduates will excel in teamwork and leadership, demonstrating strong organizational, coordination, and management skills, while cultivating lifelong learning abilities for sustained self-development.

3. Graduation Requirements

In accordance with national development needs, program objectives, and national teaching standards, graduates must meet four requirements:

l Values and convictions: Demonstrate sound political orientation, moral integrity, understanding of China's conditions, and commitment to core socialist values. Exhibit social responsibility and public welfare awareness, and aspire to become pillars of society with moral integrity and professional competence.

l Disciplinary expertise: Master Japanese language expertise and research methods, stay informed of developments and trends in the field, and integrate interdisciplinary knowledge to analyze complex problems in related areas and propose corresponding solutions.

l Comprehensive capabilities: Develop critical and creative thinking, formulate independent judgments, apply IT to solve practical problems, and effectively communicate with the public.

l Lifelong learning and development: Cultivate sustainable development awareness and lifelong learning abilities for continuous personal and professional growth.
